Anne Arundel County stretches from communities near Baltimore and Fort Meade to Annapolis and the waterways of the Chesapeake Bay. Rivers and peninsulas give different parts of the county distinct settings, from suburban neighborhoods to farm country and historic waterfronts. The county overview introduces its landscape and history.

The county was established in 1650 and named for Anne Arundell, wife of Cecil Calvert. Its history reaches beyond colonial government to the Indigenous communities of the Chesapeake region. The Severn River history offers a starting point for learning about the area before and after European settlement.

Annapolis is Maryland’s capital and a municipality within Anne Arundel County, not an independent city outside the county. Historic London Town in Edgewater, museums in Annapolis and the county’s working waterfront stories offer different ways to explore the place beyond a single downtown visit.
