Baltimore County Local Guide
Get to Know Baltimore County
Whether you rent or own in Towson, Catonsville, Dundalk or the northern countryside, begin with the exact property address. Baltimore County and Baltimore City are separate jurisdictions with different local offices, collection services and library systems.

A county distinct from the city. Baltimore County surrounds much of Baltimore City but is a separate jurisdiction. The county was in existence by January 1659/60. Baltimore City separated as a governmental unit in 1851, and Towson became the county seat in 1854. Maryland State Archives chronology traces that changing geography.
Mill villages, suburbs and open landscapes. Oella’s historic park, Towson’s civic center and the northern county’s railway corridor offer different ways to understand this varied place. The Torrey C. Brown Rail Trail history follows the former railroad into today’s recreational landscape.
