Rolling farmland, stream valleys and small towns shape Carroll County between the Baltimore region and central Maryland. Westminster is the county seat, while communities such as Taneytown, Sykesville and Mount Airy connect residents with different corners of the county.

Carroll County was created in 1837 from parts of Baltimore and Frederick counties and named for Charles Carroll. The county history overview explains how farming, mills, turnpikes and railroads shaped its towns and economy.

The county’s history is visible beyond its main streets, from the working machinery at Union Mills to agricultural interpretation at the Farm Museum. Public trails and nature areas provide another way to experience its stream valleys and wooded landscapes.
