Prince George’s County stretches from communities along Washington’s eastern edge to the wooded Patuxent corridor and Potomac waterfront. College Park’s aviation history, Greenbelt’s planned community landscape and the historic port town of Upper Marlboro offer different ways into the county’s story. A day here can pair a neighborhood library with a river trail or a museum with a garden walk.

The county was established in 1696 from parts of Calvert and Charles counties. Its story is older than that boundary. At Piscataway Park, waterways and protected landscapes connect visitors with the region’s Indigenous history. At Riversdale, interpretation includes Adam Francis Plummer and other people enslaved on the property, alongside the Stier and Calvert families. These are places to learn about the people who lived and labored here, not simply admire old houses.

Practical life also follows several overlapping maps. Incorporated municipalities have their own responsibilities, while county departments, regional utilities and state agencies handle others. A familiar postal place name does not establish city limits, a school assignment or a utility service area.
