Wicomico County brings together Salisbury’s riverfront and university setting, established small towns, farmland and forest on Maryland’s lower Eastern Shore. The Wicomico and Nanticoke river landscapes provide a strong thread through local nature and history.

Maryland created the county in 1867 from parts of Somerset and Worcester counties. The Maryland State Archives chronology traces Salisbury’s earlier development and the growth of communities such as Delmar.

Explore Black history at the Chipman Cultural Center, regional arts in downtown Salisbury and the western county’s heritage in Mardela Springs. County parks, forest trails and public libraries offer quieter ways to become familiar with the area.
